2003 Recap

Strong Finish at Miami

Johnny on the podium at MiamiJohnny Miller's strong sprint to the finish of the 2003 Trans-Am Series continued at Miami as he drove to a second-place finish at the Motorock Miami 100.

Miller finished just one second off the pace behind race winner Scott Pruett. With the result, Pruett clinched the BFGoodrich Tires Cup (Driver's Championship) for 2003, and Miller locked up second place in the points race - his career-best finish.

The season concludes October 26th at the Grand Prix of Puerto Rico. Though the championship is decided, the final race should be a big show, especially for "host" Jorge Diaz, Jr. who will be competing for the Rookie of the Year Award which is still very much up for grabs.

Three wheels off the road! The Miami race will be televised on a tape-delay basis on October 10th at 9 PM ET on SPEED.

Another Podium Finish at Denver

Johnny takes third at DenverJohnny Miller improved on a fourth-place start to earn a third-place finish and his seventh podium finish of 2003 at the MotoRock Mile 100 in Denver on August 31.

Qualifying was rained out, and starting position was determined by combined practice times. Passing was difficult on the tight street course, so starting position was critical, and the lack of a qualifying session hurt.

With another podium finish, Johnny remains firmly in control of second place in the points standings behind race winner and Rocketsports teammate Scott Pruett.

Second at Road America

Johnny qualifying at Road AmericaJohnny Miller qualified on the pole for the BFGoodrich Tires Cup at Road America and remained in a tight battle with teammate and eventual race winner Scott Pruett before the race ended under caution with Johnny in second place.

The result is Johnny's second consecutive runner-up finish and also his sixth podum finish in eight 2003 Trans-Am races. He remains second in the points standings with two races remaining.

The next race is August 31 - the Shell Grand Prix of Denver.

News from The Glen

Johnny at Watkins Glen qualifyingJohnny Miller qualified 32nd and finished 36th in his second NASCAR Series start for the #04 Morgan McClure Kodak Easy Share team.

"We just had some bad luck late in the event," said Miller, who sits second in Trans-Am points with four podium finishes and one victory. "The green flag fell and I just went racing, but that used up the car a little too much. The brakes were fading at the end, and then we had some bad luck in the pits. Although I didn't get the top-20 finish I'd hoped for, I still think it was a successful weekend.

"(Car owner) Larry McClure wants me to get some oval experience," added Miller, "and they plan to run me in an ARCA car later this year."

Johnny gets back into the Trans-Am circuit on August 24th at Road America.

Johnny at The Glen

Johnny in his Kodak racing suitIt took Johnny Miller 37 years to earn his first NASCAR start earlier this summer at Infineon Raceway, but the time before his second start will be much less.

Morgan-McClure Motorsports has brought Johnny back to drive the No. 04 Kodak Easy Share Pontiac in the Sirius at The Glen at Watkins Glen, NY on August 10.

He'll be one of eight "hired guns" at the race along with other Trans-Am regulars Scott Pruett and Boris Said.

The race will be televised LIVE on August 10 at 1 PM ET on NBC.

Miller Returns to the Podium at Trois-Rivières

Johnny returns to the podium at Trois-RivièresA trip north to Quebec was just what the doctor ordered as Johnny Miller recorded his fifth podium finish of 2003 at the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières in Quebec.

Johnny qualified and finished second, pushing race winner Scott Pruett right up to the checkered flag. The result keeps Miller in command of second place in the points standings and within striking distance of the lead with three races remaining in the season.

The series will resume on Sunday, Aug. 24 at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis.

A Banner Day at Cleveland

Johnny at Cleveland Grand PrixJohnny's Independence Day charge through the field at Cleveland was cut short when an advertising banner on the track got loose and was caught in the grill of Miller's Eaton Cutler-Hammer Jaguar XKR.

The setback resulted in a ninth place finish at the Trans-Am on the Tarmac , but Johnny held on to second place in the points standing. Scott Pruett won the Cleveland race to extend his points lead.

The season resumes August 2nd north of the border at Trois-Rivieres.

Infineon Recap

Johnny's Trans-Am ride at InfineonIt didn't quite turn out to be a perfect weekend of racing, but it's one Johnny Miller will remember for some time.

Miller's multi-race day began with the Dodge/Save Mart 350. Johnny's first career Winston Cup start was impressive as he kept clean and worked his way up from a starting position of 36th to finish 24th ahead of several veteran NASCAR drivers and teams.

A flat tire late in the race dropped Johnny from contention in the Trans-Am race later in the day, and he ended up finishing 12th. Miller surrendered the lead in the points standings to race winner Scott Pruett but still maintains solid possession of 2nd with plenty of racing left in the season.

The Trans-Am race will be televised Thursday June 26 at 9 PM on SPEED.

JOHNNY WILL PULL DOUBLE-DUTY AT INFINEON

Johnny to compete in NASCARThe racing world turns its attention to Sonoma, Calif. this weekend, and Johnny Miller will be square in the middle of all of the action.

Johnny will make his first Winston Cup Series start on June 22nd as he takes command of the No. 4 Kodak Pontiac Grand Prix fielded by Morgan-McClure Motorsports in the Dodge/Save Mart 350 of NASCAR's Winston Cup Series.

It's also a big Trans-Am weekend - there's a heated race in the points standings, and Johnny will be defending and seeking to extend his thin two-point lead.

News will be flying fast and furious through the week and the race weekend, so tune back in often and check out the News Index for the latest.

VICTORY AT LIME ROCK!

Victory at Lime RockFrom practice through qualifying through a rainy Lime Rock Grand Prix, it was Johnny Miller's weekend. Miller earned the second win of his Trans-Am career and did it in dominating fashion.

Johnny had the fastest time in the practice sessions, qualified on the pole, and led for nearly all of the race. Several cautions closed the lead he had built, but he quickly separated each time and built enough of a gap for a clean finish.

“We just had a great car,” said Miller. “It was flawless.”

Other milestones from the weekend:

  • With the win, Johnny also took over first place in the points standings. After four races, Miller has a slim two-point lead over Scott Pruett.
  • The win marked the first at Lime Rock not only for Johnny and Rocketsports Racing, but also for Jaguar.
  • Johnny continued his 2003 streak of consistency with his fourth podium finish in four races.
